Monnapule Saleng Could Be Handed Fresh Start at Orlando Pirates Under New Coach Abdeslam Ouaddou

Orlando Pirates fans could soon see the return of one of their most electrifying talents, as signs point to Monnapule Saleng being given a new chance to impress under recently appointed head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou. The 27-year-old winger, known for his pace, flair, and ability to unlock defences, has been a noticeable absentee from the Buccaneers’ matchday squads for several months.
Saleng’s last appearance for the Soweto giants came on December 7, during a goalless CAF Champions League draw against Egyptian heavyweights Al Ahly at Orlando Stadium. Since then, despite being fully fit and still contracted to the club, he has been missing from competitive action.
His absence has raised questions among supporters, especially after he featured for Bafana Bafana in a CHAN qualifier against Angola in Bloemfontein in early March. While Pirates have remained tight-lipped on the matter, whispers from within football circles suggest that a contractual disagreement may have played a role in keeping Saleng on the sidelines.
However, with Ouaddou now at the helm and preparing for the team’s upcoming pre-season camp in Spain, there is renewed hope that the winger could be reintegrated into the squad. Sources close to the club reveal that the new coach is eager to assess every player before making decisions for the 2025/26 season.
“The coach is expected to give everyone a clean slate. The plan is to go to Spain with the strongest possible group, and he (Saleng) is very much in the conversation,” a source close to the club disclosed.
Saleng’s impact during the 2024/25 season, though limited in appearances, was still notable. He featured in 13 matches across all competitions, scoring five goals and providing one assist. His ability to change games in an instant remains a valuable asset for the Buccaneers, who are aiming for a strong campaign both domestically and in continental competitions.
As preparations for the new season gather pace, all eyes will be on whether Saleng makes the traveling squad to Spain and seizes this opportunity to reignite his Pirates career.
