Mosimane Gets Coveted Early Christmas Gift:Lifts Telkom Knockout Cup In Controversial Fashion (Fan Reactions)

Outspoken and fiery Mamelodi Sundowns coach Pitso Mosimane finally had the last laugh and pointed the middle finger to both cynics and critics as his side denied Maritzburg United a chance to lift their maiden trophy in the PSL era albeit through a controversial refereeing decision.

Mamelodi Sundowns beat Maritzburg United 2-1 from the Telkom Knockout Cup final at Moses Mabhida Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

Mauricio Affonso scored the brace that gave Sundowns the edge over a determined Maritzburg United who went into the half-time break leading through giants slayer Judas Moseamedi strike.

The Brazilians lifted the trophy in controversial circumstances as United’s Judas Moseamedi was denied a late equaliser which was called offside.

Sundowns managed to add to their ever expanding trophy collection courtesy of a controversial refereeing decision that denied Maritzburg United a legitimate-looking equaliser that would have taken the game to extra time at 2-2.

Mosimane was unpertubed yet actually revelling in the glory of claiming another piece of silverware for his club.

“If we benefited‚ it is about time. In this PSL league‚ people benefit and I’m happy to go three more games (with benefits).” said Mosimane who in his pre-match interview had said he would gladly accept the trophy even if it came at the expense of poor refereeing decisions.

Linesman Sibusiso Sisilani flagged Judas Moseamedi’s diving header deep in stoppage time for offside, that would have seen the score tied at 2-2 had it been awarded and sent the tie to extra-time.

“If it was not offside‚ I don’t care. I’m waiting to benefit also. Some people benefit in a series of five games in a row. So I want to (benefit) also and I’m not ashamed of that. I’m happy‚ I don’t’care.” added Mosimane.

TV replays were inconclusive, but enthusiasts on social websites were debating the contentious circumstances that led to Sundowns lifting the trophy that generally divided fans opinion.
