Motsepe Foundation Increases ABC Motsepe League National Play-Offs Prize to R3 Million
Motsepe Foundation Increases ABC Motsepe League National Play-Offs Prize to R3 Million. The chairman of the Motsepe Foundation, Dr. Patrice Motsepe has confirmed that the prize money for the ABC Motsepe League National Play-Offs will be increased to R3 million next year.
The Confederation of African Football president confirmed this announcement to SABC Sport after crowning MM Platinum as champions after they won 2-0 beating Magesi FC in the final at the Olen Park Stadium in Potchefstroom.
Motsepe also spoke about the plan of developing football in rural areas where talent is being overlooked. He also said they would be linking amateur football to school football as they look to produce players for the top flight.
“Part of what we’re doing is to increase the prize money because they’ve been getting R1-million – [the plan is] to increase that to R3-million,” Motsepe told the media.
“And also to work together so that there are more resources for football development in the rural areas, as well as for coaches.
“But we must also link amateur football with school’s football, and over time it will translate into better football players in the Premier Soccer League, as well as in the national league (NFD).”
Before the tournament started, SAFA President Danny Jordaan said having rural areas teams in the Premier Soccer League is the evidence that football is developing in SA. “If you look at the PSL now, there are teams from the rural areas. Football has become national in the character of our competitions, from PSL, NFD, and Motsepe League. Part of that is the work being done by the regions and provinces.
“We have regional leagues. From there you get promoted to the provincial league, which is the ABC Motsepe League. You must win the league to go to the national finals. Then you can go to the national competition, which is the NFD, the first tier of professional football.
“Anyone who thinks there are no structures and development in football, I don’t know where they’re looking. The same applies for the women,” he said.
Two clubs from ABC Motsepe League Magesi FC and MM Platinum will be joining the Glad Africa Championship league next season after reaching the final. The lone goal by Sipho Mahlangu in the 74th minute saw the Westbury-based club walk away with a whopping R1, 25 million in prize money.
While the defeat was a bitter pill for Magesi FC to swallow, they still walked away with the R600 000 runners-up prize. The top goal scorer of the tournament prize went to Nala Ngcobo of Spear of the Nation (EC), while Lesego Sebetlela of MM Platinum walked away with the Player of the Tournament award. Both players also earned R100 000 for their performances.
