Mozambique Goalkeeper Ivane Urrubal Attracts PSL Interest After Heroic Bafana Display

Ivane Urrubal has emerged as one of the most talked-about goalkeepers on the continent following a commanding display for Mozambique in their recent international friendly against Bafana Bafana. Despite a 2-0 loss at the New Peter Mokaba Stadium, the 28-year-old’s shot-stopping heroics left a lasting impression — and have now sparked interest from several clubs in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL).

The match saw Bafana Bafana dominate proceedings with 21 shots, 11 of which were on target. Yet Urrubal, standing tall in goal, delivered a series of high-class saves to keep Mozambique in the contest for long stretches. It took second-half efforts from Sinoxolo Kwayiba and Ashley Cupido to finally break the deadlock.

While South Africa claimed the win and Kwayiba earned the Man of the Match award, much of the post-match buzz centred around Urrubal’s standout performance. Spectacular first-half saves to deny the likes of Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota further underlined his quality.

According to sources close to the player, the response since then has been overwhelming.

“His phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the Bafana game,” a source told KickOff.com. “He’s been getting calls from club officials and agents who want to know about his availability.”

Currently on the books of Mozambican side UD Songo, Urrubal is contracted until December. However, with the growing interest from the PSL, a mid-year transfer is becoming increasingly likely.

Urrubal is no stranger to the big stage. He was part of the national squad at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast and also featured at CHAN 2023 in Algeria. That experience, coupled with his recent display against South Africa, has added significant weight to his profile.

Should he secure a move to the PSL, Urrubal will join a distinguished group of Mozambican players who have excelled in South Africa, including legends like Tico-Tico Bucuane, Elias Pelembe, Edmilson Dove, and Manuel Kambala.

With the July transfer window fast approaching, all signs point to a potential deal that could see Urrubal become the latest Mozambican talent to shine in the South African top flight.
