MTN 8 Weekend Review As PSL Finally Returns!
MTN 8 Weekend Review As PSL Finally Returns! Premier Soccer League football returned over the past weekend. This was in the form of the MTN 8, where there were surprises all round.
MTN 8 action kicked off in Thoyandou when Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila hosted Supersport United. The Matsatsantsa ran out 3-2 winners in an enthralling encounter.
In what promised to be a one sided affair to the reigning MTN 8 champions, it was nothing of the sort. The new PSL outfit held their own against an experienced PSL team and were tough opponents despite losing 3-2.
In the late fixture on Saturday (17 October), Orlando Pirates hosted Cape Town City at the Orlando Stadium. It was a very tightly contested affair as the Buccaneers were able to see out a 1-0 win.
The goal Pirates scored saw debutants Wayde Jooste and Terrence Dzukamanja combine as the latter found the back of the net. Aubrey Ngoma also made his debut on return for Cape Town City.
On Sunday (18 October), Kaizer Chiefs hosted Maritzburg United at the FNB Stadium. Kaizer Chiefs sported no new signings while Maritzburg had four new faces.
The Pietermaritzburg side took the lead through Kutumela’s fine finish past Itumeleng Khune. In the second half, defender Sasman scored two goals within 3 minutes to turn the tie around and give Chiefs a 2-1 win.
In the last of the quarterfinal fixtures, Mamelodi Sundowns hosted Bloemfontein Celtic in Pretoria. Incredibly, Siwelele won 1-0 away from home against all odds.
It was Sundowns’ first fixture with the coaching trio of Manqoba Mngqithi, Rulani Mokwena and Steve Komphela. Sundowns missed a flurry of chances, leaving them disappointed at the end of the game.
