MTN’s Bongani Ntshingila Addresses Kaizer Chiefs’ Absence from MTN8 Tournament, Stresses the Competition’s Success

MTN’s Senior Manager of Sponsorship and Events, Bongani Ntshingila, has weighed in on the absence of Kaizer Chiefs from this season’s MTN8 tournament, stating that their exclusion did not significantly affect the competition’s overall impact. Speaking at the Goals For Charity initiative in Diepkloof last week, Ntshingila responded to queries about the Amakhosi’s absence after they finished 10th in the league, missing out on qualification for the prestigious tournament.
“It’s what the MTN8 is all about, it’s wafa wafa (do or die). Each and every single team is treated the same and we want all the top teams – and there are 16 of them, by the way – and we want them all in the MTN8,” Ntshingila explained, underscoring that the tournament’s essence remains intact regardless of which teams are participating.
Although the absence of one of South Africa’s most popular football clubs left a noticeable gap, especially among their massive fanbase, Ntshingila expressed optimism about the continued success of the competition. “Yes, with some teams it makes it easier for us to activate the platform, but one can say without Kaizer Chiefs last year, did we lose much? Probably a couple of fans,” he said.
However, Ntshingila remains convinced that the MTN8’s ability to captivate fans and maintain its excitement is not solely dependent on one team. “But honestly speaking, based on the innovation that we bring to the tournament and teams like Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates and all of them bringing it in the tournament, you find yourself in an environment where it doesn’t matter which team it is, they will always make an impact in the MTN8.”
This statement reflects the tournament’s broader appeal, highlighting the competitive nature of South Africa’s top clubs, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Orlando Pirates, and others. The MTN8 continues to attract significant attention, thanks to the high level of play and strategic innovations brought by the tournament organizers and participating teams.
In conclusion, while Kaizer Chiefs’ absence may have had an effect on fan engagement, Ntshingila’s comments emphasize the ongoing vibrancy of the MTN8, proving that the tournament is much more than just the participation of one team. It’s about the exciting competition and the innovative experiences that continue to keep fans on the edge of their seats.
