Orlando Pirates beat Venda Football Academy 2-1 in the Nedbank Cup over the passed weekend. Head coach Jose Riveiro was pleased to get over the sticky line.

The Buccaneers were expected to claim an easy win over their Motsepe Foundation Championship counterparts. Kermit Erasmus opened the scoring for Pirates in the first half.

Edmore Chirambadare levelled matters for the visitors, capitalizing on a Deon Hotto error. The game then went into extra time, as Thembinkosi Lorch found the winner for the hosts.

“Well, this is a cup game and what happened is one of the possibilities always.” The Spaniard told SuperSport TV.

“I think we managed the first half quite ok, in terms of control, even though we concede a couple of actions where the opponents could also capitalise. We were not at our level in the last minutes, we didn’t understand so well how to deal with the low block.

“Always with one extra pass, not really generous in our running’s to the space. Exactly the same in the second half, but in a different scenario, they start to press a bit higher, and we didn’t understand so well how to exploit those spaces behind and due to that [with] one mistake we concede the equaliser.

“And then it becomes a bit difficult because you get a bit nervous. No panic, but you’re in a hurry [to score] because you don’t want to go to penalties because then everything is possible there.” He added.
