‘Now Fans Can Smile Again’: Kaizer Chiefs Legend Siyabonga Nomvethe Celebrates Nedbank Cup Triumph Over Pirates

Kaizer Chiefs legend Siyabonga Nomvethe has expressed immense joy following the club’s long-awaited trophy win, describing the victory as a moment of redemption not only for the team, but also for their loyal supporters who had endured years of frustration.
Amakhosi clinched the 2025 Nedbank Cup with a 2-1 win over fierce rivals Orlando Pirates at a packed Moses Mabhida Stadium, breaking a trophy drought and putting a smile back on the faces of their fans.

Nomvethe, speaking after the triumph, said that the club’s recent struggles had left many supporters embarrassed to attend matches, fearing ridicule from rival fans. But with the cup now secured, the tide has turned.
“The boys made us happy. Things had become too tough, with the club struggling to win. What they accomplished was significant for these players. They really worked hard,” Nomvethe told KickOff.
“The derby is always challenging. It’s never easy, especially since Pirates are competing for the league while also aiming for the cup. But the boys made this day special for everyone. Even I am happy because I had become a laughing stock.”

The victory, sealed by a stunning second-half volley from Yusuf Maart, followed an early penalty goal by Gaston Sirino and a quick equaliser from Evidence Makgopa. It was a closely contested affair, but Chiefs showed greater grit and determination to ensure Pirates missed out on a third consecutive Nedbank Cup title.
The win is a huge relief for new head coach Nasreddine Nabi, who had come under pressure for the club’s underwhelming league performances. Chiefs currently find themselves outside the top eight in the Premier Soccer League standings, with just two matches remaining to salvage a respectable finish.
A Symbolic Victory
Beyond the silverware, the win carried emotional weight. Chiefs had been defeated by the Buccaneers in a league match just a week prior. This turnaround at the same venue, in front of thousands of fans, marked a powerful response — and a much-needed morale boost.
Supporters, who had grown weary of near-misses and inconsistent performances, now have a reason to believe in the team again.
“You could see that some supporters were no longer enjoying going out to watch their favorite team lose matches,” Nomvethe added. “This win gave everyone something to celebrate.”

What’s Next for Amakhosi?
Kaizer Chiefs return to PSL action on May 17 against Sekhukhune United, followed by a season finale against Polokwane City on May 24. With a top-eight finish still within reach, the Glamour Boys will be eager to build on their cup momentum and close out the campaign on a high.
For now, however, the Nedbank Cup glory offers the faithful something they haven’t had in a long time — pride, relief, and a glimpse of hope for a better future.
