On the 13th of April 1982, Real Madrid lifted their fifteenth Copa de España in football. In a final remembered for the freezing cold which engulfed the new José Zorrilla in Valladolid, the Whites beat Sporting de Gijón 2-1. Real Madrid went in front early on thanks to a Jiménez own goal, but the team from Asturias levelled with a penalty before the break. With 57 minutes gone, Ángel netted the goal which saw the madridistas lift the trophy.
The basketball team also lifted their seventh League title on this day back in 1964. The Whites got the better of Bilbao al Águilas 63-71 to clinch the trophy, which was Real Madrid’s fifth in a row. At that time, they were led by Joaquín Hernández and had the competition’s leading scorer in their ranks in Emiliano Rodríguez.
On another 13th of April, this time in 1972, the fourteenth Copa de España was won in basketball. La Coruña hosted the final between Real Madrid and Joventut, which was taken 92-77 by the Whites. Emiliano (26 points) topped the scoring charts for Pedro Ferrándiz’s men, who got their hands on the Cup for a third consecutive season. Aside from these trophies, the basketball section also clinched their second and their eighth European Cups on the 13th of April.
