Evidence Makgopa Responds to Limited Game-Time with Key Goal for Orlando Pirates

Evidence Makgopa made an immediate impact after coming off the bench to score in Orlando Pirates’ 2-1 Carling Knockout quarterfinal win over Magesi FC at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday. His goal, three minutes from time, sealed the victory following an early second-half strike from Tshepang Moremi.
The win offered relief for Pirates, who were still recovering from their CAF Champions League exit. The club had won the second-leg 3-0 against Saint-Eloi Lupopo of DRC but were eliminated on penalties after a 3-3 aggregate.
Speaking to club media after the match, Makgopa addressed the challenge of limited playing time and the importance of taking opportunities when they arise.
“First, I want to thank the Buccaneers who came out to support us even though the weather is not the best,” he said. “But going back to the game, I think every minute helps. When you are given a chance, you have to use it so that when they select the team next time, they will think of you.”
Makgopa acknowledged the psychological lift the victory provided after the disappointment in continental competition. “I think today’s win was important. We won the CAF second leg, but we failed in the penalty shootout. At Pirates, we are playing for a win, for every cup, so every game we have to win to go to the next round.”
Pirates now shift focus to a high-profile Betway Premiership clash against Mamelodi Sundowns at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday. Makgopa’s goal and performance may boost his chances of more regular game-time as the team looks to maintain momentum in domestic competitions.
The Buccaneers’ squad management and rotation strategy remain key, with players like Makgopa showing that patience and impact off the bench can influence both results and selection decisions moving forward.
