Orlando Pirates Celebrate League Glory as Dr Irvin Khoza Reflects on Historic Season

Orlando Pirates have ended their long wait for the league title with a major statement on the final day of the Betway Premiership season. The team secured a 2-0 victory over Orbit College at Mbombela Stadium to clinch the championship and complete a remarkable campaign. The result confirmed their first league triumph in 14 years and capped a season filled with silverware across multiple competitions. The club also lifted both the MTN8 and Carling Knockout titles, completing a rare domestic treble. Supporters witnessed a defining moment in the club’s modern history as the squad delivered under pressure in a decisive final match.
Club chairman Dr Irvin Khoza reflected on the narrative that surrounded Orlando Pirates throughout the title chase and addressed the idea of a long league drought. He pointed out that while the league title had eluded the club for 14 years, the period was still filled with consistent success in cup competitions and continental runs. He highlighted five MTN8 trophies, three Nedbank Cups and one Carling Knockout during that span, along with strong performances in CAF tournaments. Khoza stressed that the label of a drought often overlooks sustained competitiveness at the highest level. He also noted that the recent league title adds to a broader record of three runner up finishes in the league over the last four seasons.
The chairman also drew attention to the strong support base that helped turn Orlando Pirates into a difficult team to beat at home. He praised the supporters for turning their home venue into a fortress throughout the season, with the team losing only two of fifteen league matches at home. The strong attendance and atmosphere played a role in pushing the team through tight moments during the campaign. Khoza described the return of large crowds as a sign of renewed energy around the club and its identity. He also emphasized how supporter culture, from song to colour and presence, remains central to the club’s success.
In his full message, Dr Khoza focused on the discipline and structure behind the club’s achievements and the importance of collective effort. He stated that football history is constantly being created and recorded in real time, shaped by performance and results each season. He explained that success cannot rely on past achievements, as each campaign demands new commitment and execution. He also reinforced that the primary responsibility of a football club is to win matches and deliver trophies through coordinated work across all departments. He closed by thanking the Orlando Pirates family for what he described as a season of work, memory and return, marking the league title as both an achievement and a reflection of sustained effort over time.
