Orlando Pirates Coach Jose Riveiro Attracts Interest from African Giants Al Ahly

Outgoing Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro is reportedly on the radar of Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly as a potential hire for the upcoming season.

The Buccaneers recently announced that the Spanish tactician will leave at the end of the current campaign following the expiry of his three-year contract. Since arriving in 2022, Riveiro has played a pivotal role in Pirates’ resurgence, guiding them to five trophies and consistently challenging Mamelodi Sundowns for league supremacy.

Al Ahly’s Interest in Riveiro

Reports from North Africa suggest that Al Ahly, one of Africa’s most successful clubs, have already made contact with Riveiro as they assess their coaching options for next season.

The Red Devils’ current coach, Marcel Koller, faces an uncertain future despite his success. The Swiss manager has led the team to multiple domestic and continental titles, including the Egyptian Premier League and the CAF Champions League. However, ongoing disagreements with the club’s management have cast doubt on his tenure, potentially paving the way for a new appointment.

According to Egyptian outlet One3.news, Ahly officials have already held discussions with Riveiro.

“Al Ahly club has already contacted the Spanish coach,” a source told the publication.

“Al Ahly officials have contacted the Spanish coach via a Zoom meeting to find out all his requests, as well as his aspirations and future plans.”

The report further claims that while no final decision has been made, Riveiro is among the leading candidates should Koller depart.

What’s Next for Riveiro?

With Riveiro set to leave Pirates, he is expected to attract multiple suitors, not just from Africa but possibly from Europe as well. The Spanish tactician has showcased his ability to deliver results under pressure, making him a desirable candidate for clubs seeking stability and silverware.

Meanwhile, both Pirates and Al Ahly remain focused on their immediate targets. The Buccaneers are preparing to face Pyramid FC in the CAF Confederation Cup semi-finals, while Al Ahly will take on Mamelodi Sundowns in the CAF Champions League last four.

Should Koller exit, Riveiro could find himself in charge of one of Africa’s biggest football institutions—a move that would further enhance his reputation on the continent.
