Orlando Pirates’ Domestic Form Secures Top Ten African Ranking

Orlando Pirates’ strong domestic performances have helped them enter the top ten African club rankings, despite early elimination from the CAF Champions League. According to the Football Database website, which ranks clubs worldwide based on domestic and continental results, the Buccaneers are currently ranked tenth on the continent.
Pirates’ rise comes amid a competitive tussle with Rulani Mokwena’s MC Alger, who dropped out of the top ten to 11th spot following a loss to Al Hilal in the opening CAF Champions League group match. CR Belouizdad, led by Sead Ramovic, are also emerging as rivals, moving up to 12th after a 2-0 victory over Singida Black Stars in their CAF Confederation Cup opener. They remain five points shy of a top ten position.
Domestically, Pirates have been in impressive form. The team is unbeaten in their last nine Betway Premiership matches and recently reached the Carling Knockout final. Their consistent performances have provided the points and momentum necessary to secure continental recognition, even without further CAF Champions League involvement.
Mamelodi Sundowns, meanwhile, remain third on the continent after a 3-1 win over Saint Eloi Lupopo in the Champions League group stage. Second-placed Al Ahly also continued their strong start with a 4-1 victory over JS Kabylie. Pyramids of Egypt lead the rankings after defeating Rivers United 3-0 in the opening group match, building on a remarkable yearly average of 110 points that includes CAF Champions League and Super Cup success.
Pirates trail MC Alger by three points but have the advantage of a game in hand, with their next CAF group fixture set at home against Sundowns. Their domestic consistency remains crucial, as further points and victories could help them consolidate their continental ranking and close the gap with higher-ranked clubs.
The emergence of CR Belouizdad adds another layer of competition for Pirates, who will need to maintain their unbeaten league run and strong team cohesion to defend their top ten status. Continued domestic dominance, coupled with strategic performances in upcoming continental fixtures, will be key to cementing their place among Africa’s elite clubs.
With their current trajectory, Orlando Pirates are positioned to not only maintain their top ten ranking but also challenge for higher continental recognition in the months ahead.
