Orlando Pirates’ Fans Tasked with Driving Comeback Against Lupopo

Orlando Pirates face a crucial challenge in the CAF Champions League as they look to overturn a 3-0 first-leg deficit against FC Saint-Éloi Lupopo. The DRC side secured the advantage at the Stade Frédéric Kibassa Maliba Stadium in Lubumbashi, leaving Pirates with a difficult task ahead of Saturday’s return leg at Orlando Stadium.
Retired Congolese striker Lelo Mbele, who played for Pirates as a teenager, believes the team’s supporters could play a decisive role in the comeback. “Pirates fans must provide the push for their team and intimidate Lupopo so that they don’t feel comfortable from the first whistle,” Mbele said.
He highlighted the impact of the home pitch, noting that Lupopo struggled on similar conditions in the past. “The conditions at Orlando will not suit Lupopo because it will be heavy grass, watered and allowing the ball to move fast. The Ghost has the capacity to carry the load, and the fans have a role to play if Pirates is to overturn this deficit,” he added.
Mbele emphasized the need for an early goal to unsettle the visitors. “Pirates must attack from the first whistle because they need an early goal and then aim for a second before the break. Once that happens, it becomes a one-goal deficit to chase in the second half, with fans giving the push,” he explained.
Lupopo are known to defend with a low block, and Pirates will need quick ball movement to break them down. Despite Lupopo strengthening their squad with experienced players, Mbele believes South African conditions and home support will favour Pirates.
Historically, Lupopo’s best Champions League performance came in 1982 when they reached the semi-finals. They have failed to reach the group stage in their last four attempts, which adds hope for Pirates supporters.
The team will face Polokwane City in a Betway Premiership match at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday before their decisive continental clash. Mbele remains confident that with fan support, Pirates can stage a dramatic comeback. “I know 3-0 sounds too much, but Pirates, this is football. This is not over yet for Pirates,” he said.
The outcome will depend not just on the players but also on Orlando Stadium’s 12th man delivering the energy and intensity needed to fuel a historic turnaround.
