Orlando Pirates Midfielder Mbekezeli Mbokazi Fined After Red Card in World Cup Qualifier

Orlando Pirates midfielder Mbekezeli Mbokazi has been fined following his sending off during South Africa’s 2026 World Cup qualifier against Zimbabwe last month. The incident, which saw Mbokazi dismissed for unsporting behavior, has now resulted in a hefty financial penalty and a one-match suspension.

According to FIFA’s latest Disciplinary Overview for the World Cup qualifiers, Mbokazi’s name appears among players sanctioned for misconduct. The report cites a violation of Article 14, section 14.1(b) of the FIFA Disciplinary Code, which addresses unsporting behavior toward an opponent or any person other than a match official.

The regulation states that players or officials found guilty of such behavior are subject to suspension and may be fined. Mbokazi’s punishment included a one-match suspension, which he already served during the qualifier against Rwanda in October, and a fine of 5,000 Swiss Francs, approximately R108,000.

FIFA clarified that its judicial bodies make decisions based on the specific circumstances of each case. Some rulings may be subject to appeal, but only official communications sent to the involved parties are considered legally binding.

Mbokazi’s dismissal came during a heated match officiated by Algerian referee Mustapha Ghorbal. The game saw tempers flare on both sides, with Zimbabwe captain Knowledge Musona also sent off and facing similar disciplinary measures, including the same monetary fine.

Both head coaches, Michael Nees of Zimbabwe and Hugo Broos of South Africa, received cautions from the referee, along with Zimbabwean players Tawanda Maswanhise and Tawanda Chirewa.

The fine and suspension serve as a reminder of FIFA’s strict stance on player discipline during international fixtures. For Mbokazi, the incident marks a setback in what had been a promising run of form for both club and country. Despite the costly error, the midfielder remains an important figure for Orlando Pirates, who will hope his focus returns fully to domestic duties as the DStv Premiership season intensifies.
