Orlando Pirates Plan for the Future as Pitso Mosimane’s Name Emerges

With time running out on Jose Riveiro’s contract at Orlando Pirates, the club is reportedly weighing its options should negotiations for a renewal fail. While the Soweto giants are prioritizing securing Riveiro’s future beyond the 2024/25 season, discussions about potential successors have already begun behind the scenes.
One name that has surfaced in these internal talks is Pitso Mosimane, one of the most successful coaches in South African football history. According to sources close to the club, while there has been no official contact with Mosimane or his camp, the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Al Ahly coach is being considered as a possible replacement should Riveiro decide to leave.
Pirates Covering Their Bases
An insider revealed that Pirates’ management is simply planning for any eventuality rather than actively pushing Riveiro out.
“They are just planning things in advance, and apparently, they are looking for a coach who understands South African football inside out. Pitso Mosimane is seen as that coach. However, this does not mean they have given up on Riveiro. The club still wants to keep him but does not want to be caught off guard if he decides to leave,” the source explained.
Riveiro’s Future Still Uncertain
While Pirates have tabled an improved three-year contract for Riveiro, the Spaniard is reportedly taking his time before making a final decision. Unlike speculation about European interest, the real concern seems to be his personal situation, with family reasons playing a major role in his deliberations.
“The main issue is not about the contract offer itself. It’s about the coach missing his family. He has been away for three years, and that is what complicates the renewal talks,” another source stated.
Riveiro’s current deal expires at the end of the season, and he has attracted interest from clubs in Finland and Sweden. However, he remains focused on the ongoing campaign, with Pirates still in contention for the CAF Champions League and Nedbank Cup, having already lifted the MTN8 earlier in the season.
Would Mosimane Be a Good Fit?
Mosimane’s track record speaks for itself, with multiple league titles and continental success under his belt. Bringing him to Orlando Pirates would undoubtedly elevate the team’s ambitions, but it remains to be seen whether he would be interested in the role should it become available.
For now, Riveiro remains at the helm, and Pirates’ priority is keeping him. However, with uncertainty lingering over his future, the Buccaneers are wisely keeping their options open.
