Orlando Pirates’ Predicted Starting XI for Crucial Soweto Derby Clash Against Kaizer Chiefs

The stakes couldn’t be higher as Orlando Pirates prepare to face Kaizer Chiefs in the latest edition of the Soweto Derby this Saturday at the FNB Stadium. Following a disappointing 2-1 midweek defeat to Sekhukhune United, the Buccaneers’ Premier Soccer League title hopes hang by a thread, and only victory this weekend can keep them in touching distance of runaway leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.

As pressure mounts on coach Jose Riveiro, he is expected to name his strongest possible lineup to battle their arch-rivals in what could be a defining fixture of the campaign. Here’s how Pirates are expected to line up:

Goalkeeper: Sipho Chaine

There’s no question about this one. Chaine has been the ever-reliable wall for the Sea Robbers this season and remains one of the most trusted players in Riveiro’s squad. In a high-stakes encounter like the derby, experience and composure are non-negotiable, and Chaine offers both.

Right-Back: Deano Van Rooyen

Van Rooyen has settled in well since joining the club, combining defensive grit with occasional attacking bursts. His work rate and commitment will be vital in shutting down Chiefs’ wingers.

Left-Back: Paseka Mako

With injuries disrupting his momentum earlier in the season, Mako is finally regaining form. His inclusion allows Deon Hotto to shift back into a more advanced role where he is most effective.

Centre-Backs: Tapelo Xoki & Mbekezeli Mbokazi

With captain Nkosinathi Sibisi suspended and Olisa Ndah not at full fitness, Riveiro is expected to turn to the pairing of Xoki and Mbokazi. While Xoki brings experience—despite inconsistency—Mbokazi will be thrown into the deep end in what will be his first PSL Soweto Derby. The teenager must rise to the occasion under the pressure of a sold-out FNB Stadium.

Central Midfielders: Makhehleni Makhaula & Thalente Mbatha

The 35-year-old Makhaula brings steel and calmness to the engine room, and Riveiro will lean on his leadership in such a fierce clash. Alongside him, Mbatha—despite being a booking away from missing the Nedbank Cup final—adds the energy and forward thrust required to unsettle Chiefs’ midfield.

Attacking Midfielder: Patrick “Tito” Maswanganyi

Maswanganyi was the derby hero in the last encounter and remains one of the most inventive players at Pirates’ disposal. Although his form has dipped slightly, big games often bring out the best in Tito.

Right Attacker: Relebohile Mofokeng

A rising star who has already notched four goals and five assists this season, Mofokeng’s inclusion adds flair and unpredictability. He’ll be tasked with unlocking Chiefs’ defense, especially during counter-attacks.

Left Attacker: Deon Hotto

Back in his preferred attacking role, the Namibian international is expected to be a key outlet on the left. His pace, directness, and experience in derby situations make him a crucial piece in Riveiro’s attacking puzzle.

Centre-Forward: Evidence Makgopa

The 24-year-old has seemingly earned the coach’s confidence, edging ahead of Tshegofatso Mabasa in the pecking order. Makgopa’s physical presence and hold-up play could be essential in unsettling Chiefs’ backline.

With pride, points, and potential title dreams on the line, this Soweto Derby is about more than just bragging rights. Jose Riveiro’s men must shake off their Sekhukhune setback and deliver a complete performance to keep their season alive. Chiefs, equally desperate for a top-eight finish, will not make it easy.

All eyes will be on FNB Stadium this Saturday—the derby may well define both clubs’ seasons.
