Orlando Pirates Retired Numbers!
Retiring a player’s number usually occurs after the player has left the team or retired. It honors a player who has meant so much to his club that they retire the shirt number that the player wore during their time there, meaning no other player is permitted to use that number in the future. Below are the retired numbers in Orlando Pirates.
1.The late Senzo Meyiwa’s jersey number 1 has been retired to honor the great keeper who had most appearances in a season for Pirates in the 2013/14 season by appearing 51 times for Bucs. Senzo rose from Pirates develop and took up the number 1 jersey with pride and was known for keeping clean sheets and leading by example as a captain.
2.Jomo Sono’s jersey number 10 is retired in Bucs. No player can wear it, even Teko Modise could not and was never allowed to wear it. It honors Jomo Sono, the greatest midfielder perhaps to come out of South Africa and Orlando Pirates.
3.Clifford Moleko’s jersey number 13 is retired at Pirates. The great midfielder’s jersey has been retired to honor the great maestro.
4.The late Lesley Manyathela’s jersey number 22 is retired and now Manyathela has a PSL award named after him for scoring most goals in the PSL history while playing for Orlando Pirates.
