Orlando Pirates Still in League Title Hunt as Lekgwathi Backs Bucs to Go All the Way

With just a few matches left in the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, Orlando Pirates remain Mamelodi Sundowns’ closest challengers for the title — and club legend Lucky Lekgwathi believes the Soweto giants have what it takes to take the race to the wire.

Pirates currently trail Sundowns by nine points but have two games in hand, a gap that could shrink dramatically if they maintain their current form. While Sundowns juggle league duties with a CAF Champions League final appearance, the Buccaneers are quietly making their move in the background — and with a strong finish, they could yet cause an upset.

Lekgwathi Confident in Pirates’ Title Ambitions

Lekgwathi, who famously captained Pirates to an historic double treble in the early 2010s, has expressed confidence in the team’s chances this season. Speaking to KickOff.com, he said the March victory over Sundowns was a turning point.

“Pirates are still in the race for the title challenge. This fight will go down to the wire,” said Lekgwathi. “After beating Sundowns, we gave ourselves better chances. That win was massive, and that’s why I believe Pirates can still push for the title. It’s still within their reach.”

The Ghost — as Pirates fans are affectionately known — have been craving league success after years of cup competition dominance. Despite collecting five trophies under head coach Jose Riveiro, the league title has remained elusive since 2012.

A Fitting Farewell for Riveiro

With Riveiro set to leave at the end of the season, Lekgwathi believes winning the Premiership would be the ultimate parting gift.

“I think the players want to reward the coach with the league title. They’ve done well in other competitions already. Winning the league this season would be the best reward they could give him,” he said.

Pirates’ resilience this season has been impressive, especially after their heartbreak in the CAF Champions League semi-finals. Their ability to bounce back and stay focused domestically has given fans renewed hope that the title race is not over just yet.

Crunch Time Ahead

Pirates’ next match is a must-win clash against Sekhukhune United at Orlando Stadium on Wednesday night. With kick-off scheduled for 19:30, the Buccaneers will be looking to capitalise on their games in hand and close the gap on the log leaders.

Should they claim victory, the pressure will mount on Sundowns — who are already stretched thin due to fixture congestion and their continental commitments.

Remaining Fixtures Will Decide It All

With both teams facing tricky opponents and potential banana peels in the final stretch, the title race is far from decided. Lekgwathi’s rallying call reflects the belief within the Pirates camp — and among their supporters — that there is still all to play for.

For now, the Buccaneers remain focused, motivated, and within touching distance of reclaiming domestic supremacy.
