Percy Tau Linked with Zamalek Move After Qatar Exit, But Wages Pose Challenge

South African forward Percy Tau is once again being linked with Egyptian giants Zamalek SC following his recent departure from Qatar SC, but concerns over his wages and age could hinder a potential deal.

The Bafana Bafana star has been on the radar of the White Knights for most of 2025, with transfer rumours intensifying at the start of the year when signs emerged that he might part ways with Al Ahly. At the time, Zamalek were immediately touted as a likely destination for the Witbank-born attacker.

However, Tau opted for a move to the Qatari Stars League, joining Qatar SC in January. His stint in Doha was brief, lasting only six months. Now a free agent, the 31-year-old is evaluating his next move—and Zamalek have re-emerged as strong suitors.

Reports suggest that the five-time African champions are genuinely interested in Tau’s services, valuing his vast experience and creativity. But the deal has hit a stumbling block. According to Al Ahly legend and prominent broadcaster Ahmed Shobair, the issue lies in Tau’s salary expectations.

“Regarding Percy Tau, he is also an important player, but his salary with Al Ahly, Qatar, or when he was in Europe was very expensive,” Shobair said, as quoted by Al Masry Al Youm. “There was talk that some clubs in South Africa needed him, but the clubs in the region pay the most, and therefore South Africa is few compared to Egyptian clubs, or North Africa.”

Shobair also noted that Tau’s age could be a factor working against him. “Percy Tau has no problem, of course, because he is a professional player, but his numbers are too high for Zamalek. However, the club does not want to include older players, and therefore his chances may be the least with Zamalek, not because of his level, but because of money and age.”

Tau, who previously played in Europe with Brighton & Hove Albion and Anderlecht, has had a career full of highs and setbacks. Despite an injury-plagued stint at Al Ahly, he delivered key performances on the continental stage, helping the club clinch multiple CAF Champions League titles.

While his future remains uncertain, it is clear that Tau’s talent continues to attract interest across the continent. Whether Zamalek will be able—or willing—to meet his financial demands remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Percy Tau’s next move will be closely watched by fans from Egypt to South Africa.
