ABSA Premiership Review: Kaizer Chiefs defeat 9-man Chippa United. Respective wins for Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs and Kaizer Chiefs leave both sides on 56 points with a game each to play on Saturday, the 5th of September.
Kaizer Chiefs were fortunate to come away with all three points as a rusty Itumeleng Khune was saved by the referee. Chippa United put the ball in the back of the net in the 78th minute but the goal ruled out after Khune was fouled. Replays showed that the veteran skipper was fouled by his own player, substitute Agay.
Itumeleng Khune was playing in his first ABSA Premiership match in over a year. The experienced goalkeeper lost his place after Nigerian Daniel Akpeyi showed fine form in Khune’s long term injury absence. Khune regained a starting fixture after Akpeyi suffered a concussion in the defeat to Wits on Sunday.
The Amakhosi took the lead in the first half after a sharp Khama Billiat reacted quicker than Chippa United defenders and slid the ball into the net. Erick Matoho found himself out wide, with striker Nurkovic getting on the end of his cross. Billiat pounced on the header.
An ill disciplined Chippa United saw key player Tercious Malepe sent off in the second half after a second bookable offence. In the 87th minute, substitute Elvis Moyo received a straight red card for a two footed tackle on Ramahle Mpahlele. Lehlohonolo Seema’s men finished the game with only 9 men.
This all but neutralised whatever threat Chippa could’ve posed. Technical team member Sambo also received a booking for unsavoury comments made on the bench.
These victories mean that the league title is set to be decided on the last day in what will be a captivating spectacle for neutrals, but a nervy finish to the season for fans of Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs.
