Pirates Leap Ahead of Chiefs in Race for Stellenbosch Midfield Star Sihle Nduli

The fierce transfer tug-of-war between South African giants Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates has taken another dramatic turn, with the Buccaneers reportedly pulling ahead in the chase for highly-rated Stellenbosch FC midfielder Sihle Nduli.
What initially appeared to be a two-horse race between the Soweto arch-rivals has now shifted in favour of Pirates, with insiders suggesting the Sea Robbers are on the brink of sealing a deal for the 29-year-old, who has been a key figure for the Winelands club throughout the 2024/25 season.

Sources close to the negotiations have revealed that Pirates are making a strong push to secure Nduli’s services for next season, a move that could be vital as they prepare for a busy domestic and continental campaign.
“For now, Pirates are pulling all the stops to get the players they need. He [Nduli] is not the only one on their radar, but with him, the deal is as good as done,” a source told Soccer Laduma. “Pirates are apparently doing their best and are now favourites to beat Kaizer Chiefs to his signature.”
Contract Situation Could Complicate Things
While Kaizer Chiefs were initially hopeful of signing Nduli on a free transfer with his contract reportedly set to expire at the end of the current season, Stellenbosch FC have moved swiftly to try and tie down their midfield anchor with a contract extension.
A second source indicated that the final outcome could hinge on whether the player accepts Stellies’ renewal offer or chooses to make a big move to one of the PSL’s most iconic teams.
“It’s not clear whether Pirates will get him for free or if they’ll have to pay a fee,” the insider explained. “Stellenbosch have offered him an extension, and that could change the dynamics. But Pirates are serious, and it’s highly probable they’ll get him.”
A Strategic Signing for the Buccaneers
Nduli has been a standout performer this season, anchoring the midfield for Stellenbosch with consistency and tactical discipline. Known for his ball-winning ability, positioning, and leadership, the Bafana Bafana hopeful has become one of the most dependable holding midfielders in the league.
If he joins Pirates, he is expected to challenge and complement the likes of Makhehlene Makhaula and Thalente Mbatha in central midfield, providing depth and steel in a department crucial to the club’s success in both the PSL and CAF competitions.

Stellies Face Another Test of Retention
For Stellenbosch FC, losing Nduli would be a significant blow, but not an unfamiliar challenge. The club has developed a reputation for nurturing talent and has previously lost key players to bigger PSL outfits and overseas sides. However, they remain a club on the rise, known for astute recruitment and player development.
The coming days will be decisive. If Pirates manage to finalise the deal, it will not only be a statement of intent but also a major setback for Kaizer Chiefs, who have been looking to bolster their midfield ahead of the 2025/26 season.
With the transfer window heating up, all eyes will be on Nduli’s next move — and whether the Soweto giants’ rivalry claims another high-profile chapter off the pitch.
