Pirates Without Chaine as Keet Stands Alone in Betway Premiership

Orlando Pirates will have to cope without their first-choice goalkeeper, Sipho Chaine, for the first time this season in the Betway Premiership, marking a significant change in their defensive setup.
Chaine’s Impressive Run Ends
The 28-year-old shot-stopper has been a key figure for the Buccaneers, playing every minute of their 16 league matches so far. Since making his debut for Pirates in September 2022, Chaine has steadily risen through the ranks, cementing his position as the number one choice and significantly increasing his market value.
His latest appearance, however, came with an unfortunate consequence. During Pirates’ 2-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants, Chaine picked up his fourth yellow card of the season, resulting in an automatic suspension for the upcoming match against Chippa United on Wednesday at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.
Who Will Replace Him?
With Chaine ruled out, Melusi Buthelezi is expected to step up and make his first league appearance of the season. The former TS Galaxy keeper has only featured once for Pirates this campaign, playing in the Nedbank Cup, but now gets his chance to impress in a crucial league fixture.
Keet Becomes the Only Ever-Present Goalkeeper
Chaine’s suspension means that Cape Town City’s Darren Keet is now the only goalkeeper to have played every minute in the league this season. The 35-year-old has been a reliable presence for his team and will continue his impressive streak as Cape Town City fights for a strong finish in the league.
More Suspensions for Midweek Fixtures
Pirates are not the only team affected by suspensions this week. Kaizer Chiefs will be without Thabo Cele and Gaston Sirino, while SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt is also suspended alongside seven other players from different clubs.
As the season heads into a crucial phase, Pirates will hope Buthelezi can step up in Chaine’s absence as they look to secure maximum points against Chippa United.
