Pitso Mosimane Praises Oswin Appollis After Bafana Bafana Star Orchestrates 5-0 Eritrea Rout

Bafana Bafana head coach Pitso Mosimane has praised Oswin Appollis after the Orlando Pirates winger produced a brilliant performance in South Africa’s 5-0 victory over Eritrea. Appollis was central to the attacking display at the Al-Salam Stadium in Cairo, creating chances throughout the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier. The winger finished the match with three assists, directly contributing to several of Bafana Bafana’s goals. His creativity and movement helped South Africa break down the Eritrean defence and maintain control of the contest. Mosimane was pleased with Appollis’ contribution and also highlighted the player’s versatility across different attacking positions.

Appollis made his influence felt from the opening stages as South Africa gradually took control of the match. After Eritrea threatened during the early minutes, Bafana Bafana settled into their passing game and began finding spaces behind the opposition defence. Appollis repeatedly looked for opportunities to play forward passes and connect with the attacking players around him. His first two assists came from defence-splitting passes that allowed Relebohile Mofokeng to score twice before half-time. Mofokeng found the net in the 19th minute and again in the 45th minute, giving South Africa a comfortable 2-0 advantage at the interval.

The first-half goals demonstrated the quality of Appollis’ vision and execution. Rather than simply delivering crosses into the penalty area, the winger identified openings between the Eritrean defenders and supplied passes into dangerous spaces. Mofokeng was able to attack those spaces and finish both opportunities with composure. The combination between the two attackers gave South Africa an effective route through a defence that struggled to contain their movement. Appollis’ role in both goals also underlined why his creativity has become an important part of Bafana Bafana’s attacking approach.

South Africa continued where they left off after the interval and increased their advantage in the 52nd minute. Yaya Sithole scored the third goal after reacting quickest when Appollis’ effort was parried by the Eritrean goalkeeper. Although Appollis did not receive the assist for the goal in the official sense of the final pass, his involvement created the situation from which Sithole scored. The moment showed that his influence was not limited to direct assists. His willingness to shoot and attack the penalty area added another dimension to South Africa’s offensive play.

Appollis then registered another direct assist in the 63rd minute. The winger created the opportunity for Iqraam Rayners, who finished clinically from a tight angle to make the score 4-0. The goal further demonstrated Appollis’ ability to find teammates in difficult positions. With South Africa already holding a commanding advantage, he continued to look for attacking opportunities rather than allowing the tempo to drop. His performance remained productive deep into the match.

The final goal arrived during stoppage time when Luther Singh completed the scoring for Bafana Bafana. Appollis picked out Singh with a precise delivery, allowing the substitute to mark his return with a goal. The assist gave Appollis his third of the night and completed an outstanding individual contribution. Singh’s goal also highlighted the depth of attacking options available to Mosimane. The combination between Appollis and Singh provided a fitting finish to a match in which South Africa dominated the second half.

Mosimane was quick to acknowledge Appollis’ performance after the match. The Bafana Bafana coach praised the winger for providing three assists and highlighted his ability to operate in different attacking positions. Mosimane explained that Appollis can play on the wings and also drift inside when required. That positional flexibility gives the coaching staff more options when setting up the national team. It also allows Appollis to influence matches from different areas of the pitch rather than remaining fixed to one position.

The coach also praised Appollis for his contribution to Singh’s successful return. Singh had been out for a long period before featuring in the match against Eritrea. His stoppage-time goal provided a positive moment as he returned to the international setup. Mosimane noted that Appollis gave Singh an opportunity to make a strong comeback by supplying the assist. The interaction between the two players also reflected the importance of cooperation within the Bafana Bafana attack.

Mosimane further pointed to the absence of selfishness within the team. He noted that Singh had also delivered two good balls during the match, suggesting that the players were looking for one another rather than attempting to create individual moments at every opportunity. That approach was evident in South Africa’s attacking play throughout the match. Players moved into space, exchanged passes and created opportunities for teammates. Appollis’ three assists were a clear example of a player prioritising the team’s attacking success.

The result gave Bafana Bafana two victories from their opening two 2027 AFCON qualifiers. South Africa had previously defeated Guinea 2-1 before producing the much more emphatic 5-0 result against Eritrea. The six points provide the team with a positive start to their qualifying campaign. Appollis has played an important role in that opening sequence, particularly through his creativity and ability to contribute in the final third. His latest performance could also strengthen his position within Mosimane’s plans for the matches ahead.

Appollis will now have another opportunity to demonstrate his quality when Bafana Bafana face Egypt in an international friendly. The match is scheduled for Sunday, 4 October 2026, at the Cairo International Stadium, with kick-off set for 20:00 SAST. Egypt will provide a significantly different challenge after Eritrea struggled to contain South Africa’s attacking movement. Mosimane will be able to assess how Appollis and the rest of the attacking unit respond against stronger opposition. The fixture also gives the coach another chance to develop combinations within a team that has started its AFCON qualifying campaign with consecutive victories.

For Appollis, the Egypt friendly represents an opportunity to build on one of his most productive performances for Bafana Bafana. His three assists against Eritrea demonstrated his ability to create goals as well as contribute to attacking moves himself. His versatility also gives Mosimane the option of using him wide or allowing him to move into central areas. Maintaining that level of creativity against Egypt will be a tougher test, particularly against a side with greater defensive experience. The upcoming match will therefore provide a useful measure of whether Appollis can carry his strong form into another demanding international contest.

Appollis’ performance against Eritrea was a major factor in Bafana Bafana’s comprehensive 5-0 victory. His three assists, movement and ability to operate in different areas of the attack gave South Africa a consistent creative outlet. Mofokeng benefited twice from his passing, Rayners converted another opportunity and Singh completed the scoring after receiving Appollis’ delivery. Mosimane’s comments underline the value he places on the winger’s versatility and team-oriented approach. With Egypt next on the schedule, Appollis now has another chance to show why he has become an important attacking option for Bafana Bafana.
