Mamelodi Sundowns Pile More Misery On Polokwane City

Mamelodi Sundowns left it very late to beat Polokwane City 1-0 to end the year on a winning note whilst Polokwane City’s miserable run in the Absa Premiership continued.

Sundowns needed an 85th minute goal from substitute Sibusiso Vilakazi to collect maximum points and close the gap on run away leaders Kaizer Chiefs to six points.

Polokwane City wall slumped to their ninth straight Absa Premiership defeat and having last earned a league point in September, they end the year anchoring the league table.

Sundowns attackers were lethargic in front of goal as they squandered a plethora of opportunities despite being the dominant side in terms of possession and chances yet they wasted chance after chance.

Chief culprits for Sundowns included Gaston Sirino, Themba Zwane, Lebohang Maboe, Sphelele Mkhulise and Tebogo Langerman.

It was only after Vilakazi pounced on a loose ball inside the box to settle the contest that the Brazilians heaved a sigh of relief as they found the goal they were looking for, though, in all honesty, fatigue seems to be catching up with them as the games continue coming through thick and fast for Pitso Mosimane’s side.

Sundowns end the year on second spot on the log while City are perched at the foot of the table and in serious trouble.

Sundowns, who were playing in their sixth match since 30 November now shift their focus to continental football as they depart for Algeria on Monday to take on USM Alger in the Champions League on Saturday meaning they will spend Christmas holidays in North Africa.
