Senegal plays against Cape Verde in their AFCON round of 16 tie this evening. They are yet to display their best form thus far.

The Senegalese have only managed to score one goal throughout the entire group stages, which was a dubious penalty against Zimbabwe scored by Sadio Mane. This means that they are yet to score from open play.

They made it out of their group with one win and two draws. On a positive note, they are yet to concede a goal to this point, as well.

However, they have not at all shown why they are tournament favourites. Now that AFCON is in the knockout rounds, they need to find their shooting boots, or they risk elimination at what they would consider to be an early stage.

“We have worked so hard in the past week, and I am happy the players have regained their full confidence as we face a Cape Verde team in a Derby that we want to win.” Senegal coach Aliou Cisse told the press.

“Cape Verde have a wonderful team, but we are more than ready to face them, considering we can always create surprises when we reach this stage. The rest days have given us time to focus as a team.

“We are very motivated to get a win in what will be a very good game.” He added.

Napoli defender Kalidou Koulibaly stressed the importance of taking this game seriously. He insists that there are no small teams in the competition.

“We no longer have small teams in Africa and that is why we will go the Derby against Cape Verde very motivated.

“We accomplished our first mission of going past the group stage, and now we want to reach the ultimate. We are focusing on teamwork as it is going to be a very different match.

“We want to make our nation happy by winning convincingly to move to the next stage. We intend to give our best in all circumstances while respecting our opponents” he added.
