PSL Introduces Goal Of The Month
The Premier Soccer League introduced the Goal of the Month awards and Orlando Pirates’ Marc van Heerden has walked away with the very first accolade for the months of August/September, based on votes from the fans, with Kaizer Chiefs’ George Lebese receiving the award for the month of October. Marc van Heerden, George Lebese, Oscarine Masuluke and Percy Tau have been named Absa Premiership Goal of the Month winners for September, October, November and December respectively.
Orlando Pirates fullback Van Heerden was recognised for a free-kick he converted in the colours of former club Chippa United against Baroka on September 28. Kaizer Chiefs winger Lebese’s winning strike came against Ajax Cape Town on October 15, as he rounded goalkeeper Brandon Petersen and slotted home after running onto a through-ball from Siphiwe Tshabalala. Bakgaga keeper Masuluke netted a last-gasp equaliser with an overhead kick following a corner against Pirates on November 30, while Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Tau earned acclaim for his efforts against Free State Stars in December.
Winners of every month’s Goal of the Month award will automatically become one of the contenders/candidates for the annual Absa-Lutely Awesome Goal Of The Season accolade, which is handed out at the PSL award ceremony. This has just made things be competitive for strikers and perhaps we will end up with the top scorer with goals above 20 and make the PSL much more exciting and packed with goals.
