Relebohile Mofokeng Rejects Al Ahly Move, Eyes European Dream

Orlando Pirates midfielder Relebohile Mofokeng has firmly rejected an offer from Egyptian giants Al Ahly during the recent winter transfer window. The 19-year-old rising star turned down the opportunity to join the reigning CAF Champions League winners, with sources indicating that Percy Tau’s struggles at the club played a key role in his decision.

Why Mofokeng Rejected Al Ahly

According to Soccer Laduma, Al Ahly made a formal approach to both Mofokeng and Pirates, hoping to secure the midfielder’s services. However, the response was swift and clear—Mofokeng is not interested in making the move to Egypt.

A major factor in his decision was the experience of fellow South African Percy Tau, who has faced difficulties despite winning major trophies with Al Ahly. While Tau has enjoyed team success, his struggles to adapt and cement a long-term place in the squad have been widely discussed. Mofokeng, aware of these challenges, appears to have decided against following a similar path.

European Ambitions & Hugo Broos’ Influence

Another critical influence on Mofokeng’s decision is his ambition to play in Europe. The talented midfielder has been one of Pirates’ standout performers in both the Betway Premiership and the CAF Champions League, attracting interest from European scouts.

Additionally, Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has long advocated for South African players to move directly to European leagues rather than staying in Africa. Broos even left Tau out of his squad due to his time in Egypt, signaling his preference for players competing in more competitive leagues abroad. Mofokeng seemingly took this advice to heart, reinforcing his decision to turn down Al Ahly’s approach.

Zamalek’s Late Attempt & Future Plans

Reports also suggest that Zamalek, another Egyptian powerhouse, made a last-minute bid for Mofokeng on transfer deadline day. However, Pirates rejected the offer, further affirming the player’s desire to remain patient for a European move.

With Mofokeng’s decision final, Al Ahly have reportedly closed the door on any future approaches for the midfielder. For now, the young star remains focused on helping Pirates succeed domestically and in continental competition while waiting for the right European opportunity to present itself.
