Rivaldo Coetzee’s Future at Sundowns Uncertain as Contract Nears Expiry

Rivaldo Coetzee’s future at Mamelodi Sundowns remains uncertain, with his contract set to expire at the end of June. While the club holds an option to extend his deal for another season, the lack of game time under new head coach Miguel Cardoso has raised questions about whether the Brazilians will trigger the extension.

The 28-year-old has yet to make an appearance under Cardoso after suffering an injury before the Portuguese tactician replaced Manqoba Mngqithi in December. With just over two months left in the campaign, Coetzee faces a race against time to return to action and prove his worth before Sundowns make a decision. The club has until the end of May to exercise their option.

Agent Mike Makaab remains optimistic about Coetzee’s future, telling Soccer Laduma that there is no concern over his client’s next move. “He’s doing fine. I think they haven’t rushed him (to return), but he seems to be doing well. Let’s hope that he is back on track soon,” said Makaab. When asked if there was worry about Coetzee not having enough time to impress Cardoso, he added, “Not at all. If Sundowns don’t exercise the option, I am confident that we will have suitors. He is a talented player.”

At this stage, it is unclear when Coetzee will be ready to return to Sundowns’ matchday squad. His main challenge will be regaining full fitness and earning a spot in the team before the season concludes. With the FIFA Club World Cup scheduled for June in the United States, he will be eager to be part of the squad if he remains with the club.

Sundowns have shown faith in Coetzee despite his injury setbacks over the years, appreciating his versatility in both defence and midfield. However, as the campaign nears its end, the crucial question remains—will the club extend his stay, or will he seek a new challenge elsewhere? The coming weeks will provide the answer.
