Rulani Mokwena Eyes Reunion with Cassius Mailula at MC Alger

Rulani Mokwena is wasting no time stamping his identity at new club MC Alger, with reports suggesting the South African tactician is keen to reunite with forward Cassius Mailula ahead of the 2025/26 campaign.

The 39-year-old Mokwena, who recently took charge of the reigning Algerian champions, is reportedly already in discussions with the club’s management to bring in players who align with his tactical philosophy. According to Dzair Tube, one of his top targets is Mailula — a player he knows well and trusts deeply.

The pair’s successful working relationship began during their time at Mamelodi Sundowns in the 2022/23 season. Under Mokwena’s guidance, Mailula quickly rose to prominence, showcasing his goal-scoring instincts and versatility in attack. His impressive form eventually earned him a move to Major League Soccer side Toronto FC.

However, Mailula’s stint in North America was far from smooth. Limited game time and difficulty adapting to the league saw his momentum stall. Seeking a revival, the 24-year-old reunited with Mokwena at Wydad Athletic Club on loan during the 2024/25 season. That decision proved fruitful as Mailula rediscovered his form, becoming an integral part of Wydad’s attack and featuring prominently in the FIFA Club World Cup.

Both Mokwena and Mailula have since parted ways with the Casablanca-based outfit — Mailula’s loan expired, while Mokwena departed shortly before the season concluded. With Mokwena now leading Algeria’s most decorated and supported club, MC Alger, he appears eager to reignite the partnership once again.

Mailula’s future remains uncertain at Toronto FC, and should the Canadian side be open to a transfer or loan, MC Alger could be a viable destination. Last season, the Bafana Bafana international notched six goals and seven assists across all competitions — numbers that highlight his continued impact when given the right environment.

For Mokwena, securing Mailula’s services would be a strategic move as MC Alger aim for a third consecutive league title and a strong continental run. His speed, creativity, and ability to link play could add a new dimension to an already competitive squad.

If the deal goes through, it could mark yet another chapter in the flourishing coach-player relationship between Mokwena and Mailula—one that has consistently delivered results whenever reunited.
