Rulani Mokwena Faces Another Setback as Oussama Mahrous Departs Wydad Athletic Club
Wydad Athletic Club coach Rulani Mokwena has been dealt another blow in the January transfer window, as midfielder Oussama Mahrous confirmed his departure from the Moroccan giants. Mahrous is the fifth player to exit the club this month, joining Bahraini outfit Al-Muharraq SC.
Mass Departures Hit Wydad
The 29-year-old central midfielder follows M’Baye Niang, Mohamed Ounajem, Chouaib Faidi, and Taha Mourid out of the door as the Red Castle undergoes significant changes in their squad. Mahrous, who joined Wydad in January 2023, managed 19 appearances for the club but has now opted to continue his football journey elsewhere.
Taking to social media, Mahrous bid an emotional farewell to the club and its fans:
“A beautiful chapter of my football life ended today with me leaving Wydad Athletic Club after a short trip, but it meant a lot to me. I challenged difficulties and enjoyed the best times when I wore the shirt of the sweatiest club in Morocco with its history, titles, large and loyal fans, and which stood by my side in the most difficult circumstances.
“I had the honor of playing alongside great players and benefited from their advice. Today I am leaving my second family. I had to offer more, but it is a year of life.”
Coaching Changes Amid Transfer Turmoil
The challenges at Wydad aren’t limited to the playing squad. Reports suggest that Moroccan coach Youssef Achami is set to join Rulani Mokwena’s technical team as an assistant coach. Achami is no stranger to the Red Castle, having previously worked under coaches like Faouzi Benzarti, Abdelhadi Sektioui, and Zoran Manojlovic. His return comes as the club looks to stabilize and strengthen its structure during a challenging period.
What’s Next for Wydad?
Currently sitting third in the Botola Pro 1 standings, Wydad Athletic Club faces an uphill battle to secure a spot in continental competitions next season. Mokwena, who took over the reins at Wydad, will now need to adapt his strategies to account for the recent departures and ensure the team remains competitive on all fronts.
The January transfer window has proven to be a transformative period for the club, with both opportunities and uncertainties arising as they prepare for the second half of the season. Fans will hope that Mokwena and his technical team can bring in the right reinforcements to keep Wydad on track for success.
