The Brazilians created by far the clearer opportunities in the game. They were unable to make the most of the chances as the game headed into extra time.
Pirates’ goalkeeper Sipho Chaine saved penalties from Bongani Zungu, Junior Mendieta and Teboho Mokoena, to guide them to their second successive top 8 triumph.
“Let’s focus on the positives, which are that this team always tries its level best to win, and it will bounce back. It’s a difficult one to stomach but we’ll bounce back,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV after the loss.
“The conditions were quite difficult and even the pitch was not the best and quite long and heavy and slow, even though they tried to water.
“But it sounds like sour grapes when you speak about conditions when you don’t win.
“With [Lucas] Ribeiro, the medical team tried very hard to get him back but it wasn’t to be. They worked very hard also on Peter, who picked up a knock in the week.
“He showed unbelievable selflessness.” The head coach concluded.
