SA Government Accused Of Paying R120m To Fifa Officials As Bribe
The South African football and government officials are being accused of offering a $10m bribe, to secure the spot in the 2010 World Cup. The US Justice Department says that this is the second bribe that was paid by South Africa, the first bribe took place in 2006 World Cup but the bribe was not successful.
Documents have been revealed that the South African government paid $10 m to secure three FIFA officials votes to secure the 2010 FIFA World Cup. Morocco paid $1m to Warner in exchange for his agreement to cast a secret ballot on the FIFA executive to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup in Morocco but when South African government heard the news they arranged a meeting and paid $10 m to secure their place.
After the South African government made the payment, the FIFA officials including Warner, knew that they had to vote for South Africa to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup. On the 15th of May 2004, South Africa was selected to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup and Morocco and Egypt were not chosen.
South African government failed to make payment and they then later paid with the money from FIFA that was going to support the World Cup.
