SA Rugby Players WAGS: Driving Force Behind Springboks World Cup Triumph?
A handful of ladies joined the millions of South Africans who supported the Boks all the way to World Cup Glory – their wives and girlfriends.
The players proud wives and girlfriends jetted to Japan to take in all of the action live and obvious to explore the city and get a few goodies whilst offering much needed support to their muddied and bloodied significant other on the field of play.
If you’re new to the WAG-spotting game, we’ve rounded up a list of wives and girlfriends who brought excitement off the field and became the driving force behind the Springboks famous and historic victory.
1. Rachel Kolisi
Rachel is the wife of the Springbok captain, Siya Kolisi. The couple tied the knot in 2016.
The couple’s relationship has been more in the spotlight than the normal rugby player’s marriage. The two have now been married for three years and unfortunately, because of Kolisi’s celebrity status, their marriage has been rocked by rumours and hearsay.
Rachel is one of the owners of RISE, a fitness company that runs inspirational events around South Africa for women.
2. Kuziva Mtawarira
Tendai Beast Mtawarira’s mother first noticed Kuziva Makore singing in church, and promptly gave Makore her son’s number. What followed was a three-month courtship taking place over the phone.
The two tied the knot in 2015. The star-studded guest list included Mtawarira’s Springbok teammates.
Kuziva studied psychology, and the pair have two children – Talumba and Wangu.
3. Marise Pollard
In December 2017, Flyhalf Handre Pollard tied the knot to his long-time girlfriend, Marise.
Marise is more than a match for her athletic beau, having won a gold medal and two silvers in the 800m at the South African National Championships.
The sportswoman now has her sights set on qualifying for the Olympics next year in Tokyo.
4.Layla Cupido
When Cheslin Kolbe and fiancé Layla Cupido tied the knot in January last year, their stunning summer wedding was featured on Top Billing. Throughout his rugby career, Cupido has been the driving force behind the fullback player.
Layla, who shares daughter Kayla with her rugby player husband, has a post-graduate degree in business communications and accounting.
The photogenic couple, who live in Toulouse, south west of France, where Kolbe plays club rugby, both proudly talk about their Christian faith on their social media profiles.
5.Mine Van Niekerk
Girlfriend to Faf De Klerk, Mine Van Niekerk is a university graduate.
6. Holly Clare
Willie Le Roux was joined in Japan by his glamorous girlfriend Holly.
The couple recently relocated to Tokyo after Le Roux – a self-described ‘sushi addict’ – signed for Top League Japanese team Toyota Verblitz.
