“She said yes” – Barr proposes to his girlfriend

After having a flourishing season, Jethren Barr took his time to propose to his girlfriend and she said, “Yes”. Most footballers make use of the off-season to go out on holidays with wives or girlfriends and this is the perfect time to propose without worrying about going to training.

Barr is a South African goalkeeper that plays for Portadown in the NIFL Premiership in Northern Ireland. He was born in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal and played for Westville United Football Academy, Escombe FC before he joined Bidvest Wits.

Wits loaned him to Stellenbosch FC before he joined his home province-based team, Maritzburg United in 2017. Barr played for the South Africa national team at U17, U20 and U23 level, including being part of the U20 squad that won the Commonwealth of Independent States Cup in 2015.

The 25-year-old goalkeeper has always expressed his desire to play for Bafana Bafana and in Europe. His Europe dream came into the reality last season and all he has to do now is to convince Bafana mentor Hugo Broos that he has what it takes to deliver. “For now, my next move I want to get as much game time as possible, and eventually I want to be in the Bafana Bafana team and playing in Europe,” said Barr after leaving Maritzburg United in June last year.

This was not the first time that Barr got the opportunity to play abroad. There is a Danish team called HB Koge who were interested in him while he was still at the Team of Choice but Maritzburg held on to him.

Barr was reportedly helped by former Irish League stopper Michael Dougherty for the Portadown move to materialize. “Special thanks to Lee Mudd (football agent), Michael Dougherty and the NI Goalkeeping Institute for scouting me and getting Matthew (Tipton) to analyse last season’s performances. I can’t wait to prove to Matthew and everyone that Portadown were right to bring me in as I strive to make the number one jersey my own.”
