Siyabonga Ngezana Edges Closer to Third European Trophy with FCSB

Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Ngezana is on the verge of securing his third piece of silverware in European football after helping his Romanian club, FCSB, secure a spot in the championship round of Liga 1.

Another Title in Sight

Ngezana, who joined FCSB in 2023, has already lifted the Romanian league title and the Super Cup in his debut season. Now in his second campaign, the former Kaizer Chiefs star is in contention to defend the league crown as his club continues to dominate Romanian football.

In their latest fixture, Ngezana played the full 90 minutes in freezing, snowy conditions as FCSB secured a crucial 2-0 victory over AS FC Buzău on Sunday evening. The win propelled them to 49 points and guaranteed their place in the top six ahead of the championship round, with three regular-season games still to play.

How the Championship Round Works

In Romania’s Liga 1, the top six teams from the regular season advance to the championship round, where their points are halved (rounded up) before facing each other twice. The team finishing at the top of this mini-league will be crowned champions, while the second and third-placed teams will secure spots in European competitions.

With FCSB already assured of their place, Ngezana is well on his way to competing for yet another domestic title.

European Ambitions

Ngezana’s European journey isn’t limited to domestic success. His team is also competing in the UEFA Europa League and is currently leading their knockout play-off tie against Greek giants PAOK.

FCSB claimed a 2-1 victory in the first leg in Greece and will now look to finish the job at home on Thursday. Should they progress, they will face either French club Olympique Lyonnais or German side Eintracht Frankfurt in the next round.

A Season of Promise

With both the Liga 1 title and European progression on the line, Ngezana is enjoying a promising season in Romania. His performances have been instrumental in FCSB’s success, and he remains on course for another major milestone in his European adventure.
