Siyabonga Ngezana Faces Consecutive European Demotions with FCSB

Bafana Bafana defender Siyabonga Ngezana is navigating a challenging chapter in his European journey as his Romanian club, FCSB, faces another early exit from UEFA Champions League contention. For the second year in a row, Ngezana has been part of a squad relegated from one European competition to another after a disappointing qualifying round.

FCSB were knocked out of the UEFA Champions League in the second qualifying round by North Macedonian side KF Shkëndija. The Romanian champions suffered a 1-2 home defeat and followed it up with a 1-0 loss away, ending their Champions League aspirations prematurely. As a result, they now drop into the UEFA Europa League third qualifying round.

This marks the second straight season that FCSB have failed to progress beyond the early Champions League qualifiers. In the 2023/24 campaign, the club also stumbled in the third round and dropped into the Europa League, where they managed to reach the group stage and later exited in the round of 16.

Now, FCSB will aim to revive their European hopes with a two-legged tie against FC Drita of Kosovo. Victory in this round will send them to the Europa League play-off round, the final hurdle before the lucrative group stage where heavyweight clubs like Roma, Aston Villa, and FC Porto await.

However, another aggregate defeat could mean further demotion to the UEFA Conference League play-off round—placing Ngezana on a rare path that could see him feature in all three European competitions within a single season.

Despite the recent setbacks on the continental stage, Ngezana’s individual progress at FCSB has been noteworthy. Since joining from Kaizer Chiefs in July 2023, the 28-year-old has won four trophies with the club and is on course to reach 100 appearances. His transfer value has soared, reportedly increasing at least fourfold over the past year, reflecting his growing influence in European football.

With his club determined to stay in the continental spotlight and Ngezana approaching a major milestone, the next few weeks will be critical in shaping both FCSB’s campaign and the defender’s European legacy.
