Victor Gomes was announced as part of the refereeing team in the 2022 FIFA World Cup. He took charge of reigning world champions France last night.
The French defeated Australia 4-1 to start their tournament on a high. The great thing is that no one is talking about any controversial refereeing decisions, which is great.
This means that Gomes and his team were superb on the field of play. Alongside assistant Zakhele Siwela, these are the only two South African representatives at the tournament.
The team also had Souru Phatsoane from Lesotho as the second assistant referee and Salima Mukansanga from Rwanda as the other assistant referee.
This is another great achievement in the career of Victor Gomes. He took charge of the AFCON Final between Senegal and Egypt in February this year.
He was praised for his poise and how he managed the big egos in the match, particularly Mohamed Salah.
