Soweto Derby:Blockbuster Clash Tickets Now On Sale

The most notable sporting calendar clash between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates with a rivalry that dates back from 1970 is set for 9 November 2019 with tickets now on sale at various outlets across the country. 

The fixture has generated hype and euphoria as Kaizer Chiefs top the current log standings after 8 games in the 2019/20 season whilst Orlando Pirates are in a struggle of sorts 10 points behind.

The “Battle Royale” tickets retail from R70 and can be bought at Checkers, Shoprite and Computicket outlets.

The historic rivals are set to battle it out in another Soweto Derby at the iconic FNB Stadium and this year mark 49 years since the first derby in 1970.

The two teams attract the largest fanbase amongst all the teams in the country and the fixture etched in history holds the nation spellbound as the club players and fans compete for bragging rights.

Soweto Derby Interesting Facts

  • Kaizer Chiefs legend Doc Khumalo made his debut in a Soweto Derby and made a total of 397 appearances.
  •  Did you know the first ever Soweto derby took place on 24 January 1970?
  • The last player to score a hat trick in the Chiefs v Pirates derby was Jerry Sikhosana‚ who got three in Pirates’ 4-1 win in November 1996.
  • The fastest goal in the history of the derby match came after just 19 seconds from Mabhudi Khenyeza for Chiefs in Durban in November 2007.
  • Namibian Herman Blaschke was the first foreigner to score in the derby in 1975. Later the same year Zimbabwean Ebson Muguyo also got a goal for the Amakhosi. 
  • Chiefs and Pirates are among the only three SA clubs to have won a title in African club competition. Mamelodi Sundowns won the 2016 Caf Champions League and went to win the Caf Super Cup. 
  • Pirates won the African Champions Cup in 1995. Chiefs won the African Cup Winners’ Cup in 2001.
