Sphelele Mkhulise Earns Mamelodi Sundowns Contract Renewal Despite Limited Game Time

Mamelodi Sundowns have confirmed the contract renewal of midfielder Sphelele Mkhulise, popularly known as ‘Blesser’, extending his stay for two years with an option for a further season. While the midfielder has not featured heavily in matches this season, head coach Miguel Cardoso explained why the club felt he deserved the new deal. Sundowns see Mkhulise as an important figure in the squad, both on and off the pitch.

Cardoso addressed the reasoning during a Nedbank Cup press conference at the PSL offices in Parktown, Johannesburg. He noted that Mkhulise’s limited appearances do not diminish his value. “I think Pitso deserves this very much, the renewal of his contract, and for sure that’s how Sundowns works,” Cardoso said. “Pitso was not really played a lot by me, but it does not mean he was not important. He kept strong focus and drive on his intentions. He is a very high-level professional, and he always trains well.”

The coach highlighted Mkhulise’s resilience and professionalism as key factors in the decision. Despite competition for places, Mkhulise has maintained a strong attitude in training and remained committed to the team. Cardoso described him as a symbol of the club and a senior player with extensive experience, whose influence extends beyond matchday appearances. He also praised Mkhulise’s recent strong performance during a training camp, which reinforced his importance to Sundowns.

Mkhulise has made seven appearances across all competitions this season. He could feature again when Sundowns take on Gomora United in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 at Loftus Stadium on Wednesday evening. His inclusion would give him the chance to demonstrate his value on the field after a season of limited minutes.

Sundowns are also evaluating the futures of other key players, including Themba Zwane, Jody February, and Mothobi Mvala, as the season approaches its final stages. Mkhulise’s renewal shows the club’s commitment to retaining experienced professionals who contribute to the team’s stability and culture, both on and off the pitch.
