Kaizer Chiefs Eye Europe-Based Defender Nkanyiso Shinga in Contract-Ending Opportunity

Kaizer Chiefs are reportedly closing in on a strategic signing of a Europe-based defender, Nkanyiso Shinga, as the left-back nears the end of his contract with Portuguese side FC Alverca on June 30. This development has sparked optimism at Naturena, with the club aiming to secure the player on a free transfer ahead of their upcoming pre-season preparations.
An insider familiar with European football confirmed to Soccer Laduma that Chiefs are closely monitoring Shinga’s contract situation and are hopeful about finalizing a deal without incurring a signing fee.
“The club is believed to be waiting for this month-end when Nkanyiso (Shinga) is expected to be a free agent and that’s what the team is hoping on. They are really happy with what they have seen in him and the free agent part could work to Chiefs’ advantage and they are apparently working on that,” the source revealed.
The urgency to strengthen defensively is aligned with Chiefs’ transfer priorities, particularly at left-back, as they prepare to travel to the Netherlands for their pre-season tour. An insider close to Naturena disclosed that the club is focused on reinforcing both the left-back position and the striking department.
“Yes, the left back and the striking department are the priorities for the club to sign at the moment and that’s why their main focus is looking at which players they can get and there are a few they have listed and Nkanyiso Shinga is one of those on the wanted list,” the insider told the Siya crew.
Shinga, a former KZN Academy graduate, has been plying his trade in Portugal with FC Alverca, where he featured regularly last season. His European experience adds tactical diversity and technical prowess that could complement Chiefs’ squad depth, especially when compared to locally-based options.
Attempts to get an official comment from Kaizer Chiefs on the situation were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
If secured, the signing of Shinga would mark a savvy piece of business, allowing Chiefs to strengthen their defensive line without significant financial outlay. This would enable the club to channel resources towards other key areas, such as bolstering their attack.
With the pre-season tour to the Netherlands fast approaching, finalizing the acquisition of Nkanyiso Shinga would tick an important box in Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane’s plans, setting a solid foundation ahead of a demanding 2025/26 campaign.
