Stan Matthews On SuperSport – Sundowns Transfer Business
SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews says they are not a Mamelodi Sundowns’ academy. The last five players Matsatsantsa sold went to Sundowns and Matthews says they’re in a football business with their cross-town rivals.
Not only the last five players SuperSport sold went to Sundowns but the two clubs have had a great relationship when it’s coming to trading. “We are not Sundowns’ development structure,” said Matthews.
“Yes, the last five players we sold were to Sundowns but we are in business. If someone comes for a player, you face two options. You are either going to lose your player on a free transfer or you are going to have a grumpy unhappy player who is sitting on the sidelines and actually becoming a problem in the camp.

“You want to have players who love being at the club, are ambitious and want to earn their big move. That’s not a problem for us but you need to show us what you can do first. Add to our trophy cabinet and don’t use our club as a bus stop. We don’t want that. We are not going to accept a culture in the club where young boys want to stay for one year and then they want to leave. They have to add to our football club and we will add to their lives.
“There are players like Daine Klate who added to the trophy cabinet and when he wanted a move, we asked him where he would like to go and we’ll make it happen. Players like Teboho who has been fantastic for us since he was a teenager. He never missed a day’s training, never had problems and his work ethic and humility was everything that you want in a player. When he has about eight years at the club and he wants to move, you want to give him that chance,” added Matthews.
SUPERSPORT UNITED CEO CONFIRMS WILLIAMS’ DEPARTURE?
Another player could soon leave Matsatsantsa for treble winners and that’s Ronwen Williams. The player himself expressed a burning desire to play for SuperSport’s cross-town rivals. Now the club’s CEO Stan Matthews has admitted that their captain is likely to leave soon

“It’s never just a straight forward situation because there’s negotiations and discussions. There’s nothing that’s been advanced to any level that I can contretize right now, but once I’ve sat down with Gavin over the weekend and look at different permutations on how we can freshen up the team and what kind of replacements we can (get), then I will have a clearer picture in my own mind how viable the sale of Ronwen will be,” Matthews told media after a press conference where they unveiled Hunt as coach on Thursday.
“It’s likely that he will leave, but as I say, it’s something that I’ve got to sit down and discuss with Gavin. If we can’t get the right replacement… Gavin is very strong on the spine of the team and that starts with the keeper. Ronwen is the national team goalkeeper and he is our most capped player. He is our captain and our poster child. He is our longest serving player, so it’s not a normal trading of a player.”
