Steve Lekoelea Questions Why Relebohile Mofokeng Has Not Moved Abroad

Orlando Pirates legend Steve Lekoelea has raised questions over why talented attacker Relebohile Mofokeng has yet to secure an overseas move. Despite being widely regarded as one of South Africa’s top young footballers, Mofokeng remains in the local league while former Buccaneers players such as Mohau Nkota, Mbekezeli Mbokazi, and Puso Dithejane have already joined clubs abroad.

Lekoelea considers Mofokeng the best young talent in the country but believes circumstances beyond his control may be delaying an international transfer. Speaking to KickOff, he said the timing and agreements between the player and the club could be factors.

“In football, you need luck. Mofokeng is the best young footballer in South Africa, but the likes of Mbokazi went abroad before him,” Lekoelea said. “Another thing we don’t know is the deal Pirates and Mofokeng have in place. He should have left the country a long time ago. Only Pirates and Mofokeng know what their agreement is.”

Lekoelea stressed that the player’s talent is not in question. He believes Mofokeng is more than capable of performing in overseas leagues and is motivated to make the move. The challenge appears to be reaching an agreement that satisfies both parties, with the club likely valuing him highly.

“This thing of not getting an overseas deal is going to hurt him because he must be thinking, ‘I should have been the first one to leave,’” Lekoelea added. “It may be affecting his performance in the national team. But I think the reason he is not overseas yet is because the club has not allowed him, not because he is not good enough.”

For Mofokeng, the key will be finding a balance between his ambitions and the terms set by Orlando Pirates. With his talent and potential widely recognized, an overseas move could still happen if both sides reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

The situation highlights the complexities young South African players face when navigating international transfers, even when their ability is unquestionable. Mofokeng’s career trajectory remains one to watch closely for both local and international football observers.
