Sundowns Dominate PSL as Pirates Face Uphill Battle in Title Race

Mamelodi Sundowns have taken a commanding lead in the Premier Soccer League (PSL) title race, opening up an 18-point gap at the top of the standings. While Orlando Pirates still have several games in hand, closing the gap on the high-flying Brazilians will be no easy task.
Sundowns in Complete Control
The reigning champions have once again stamped their authority on the league, displaying consistency and dominance. Their latest victory has widened the gap between them and their closest rivals, leaving Pirates with a mountain to climb if they are to challenge for the title.
Pirates’ 2-0 defeat to Marumo Gallants further dented their chances, making their pursuit of Sundowns even more difficult. While the Buccaneers have four games in hand, winning all of them would still only bring them within six points of Masandawana—provided Sundowns do not drop points along the way.
Former Pirates Star Doubts Title Chances
Former Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Innocent Mayoyo has weighed in on the title race, expressing little hope for his old club.
“The league is gone,” Mayoyo told KickOff. “I don’t think anyone can dispute that, and it’s painful because we all know what we’re talking about. My experience with the South African league tells me the title is lost, and we shouldn’t act as if this is an accident.”
Mayoyo also questioned Pirates’ recruitment strategy, pointing out that some of their recent signings lack the experience and winning mentality needed to challenge a team like Sundowns.
“People must stop comparing Pirates to Sundowns. That’s where they go wrong. We must accept that the current Pirates team is just beginning to gain experience in playing in Africa.”
Can Pirates Make a Late Push?
Despite the bleak outlook, Pirates’ games in hand provide them with an opportunity to keep the title race alive. If they can string together a winning streak while hoping for a few slip-ups from Sundowns, they could mount some late pressure on the log leaders.
Both teams face crucial fixtures in their next outings. Sundowns will take on Golden Arrows at Mpumalanga Stadium, where Manqoba Mngqithi will be looking to upset his former employers. Meanwhile, Pirates will visit Chippa United at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, hoping to keep their fading title hopes alive.
With the season approaching its final stretch, the question remains: Is the PSL title already decided, or can Pirates defy the odds and make a late charge?
