Sundowns Secure Divine Lunga Future as Club Confirms Contract Decision

Mamelodi Sundowns have made a clear decision on the future of Zimbabwean defender Divine Lunga. According to his agent Mike Makaab, the Betway Premiership champions have exercised an option in the player’s contract, keeping him at Chloorkop for the foreseeable future.

Lunga has not been a regular starter under head coach Miguel Cardoso. Even so, he has delivered solid performances whenever called upon. His reliability and tactical discipline have made him a trusted squad member in a team known for heavy rotation and intense competition for places.

The left back recently represented Zimbabwe at the Africa Cup of Nations. His international involvement has reinforced his standing as a dependable defender at the highest level. Sundowns have now moved to secure that value by activating the contract extension.

“Sundowns have exercised their option. He has another two years left,” Makaab confirmed. He highlighted the club’s congested schedule and the importance of squad depth. Sundowns compete across multiple fronts every season. That reality demands experienced players who can step in without a drop in quality.

One of Sundowns’ biggest strengths over the years has been depth across all positions. Lunga fits that model. He offers cover at left back and can also operate as a left sided centre back. This versatility increases his importance in a squad chasing domestic and continental honours.

The former Golden Arrows defender has made eight appearances in all competitions so far. He will be aiming to increase that tally in 2026 as Sundowns push for more silverware. His situation stands out at a club where many players have gone out on loan and returned without receiving meaningful opportunities.

Lunga is different. He went out on loan earlier in his career and came back stronger. Since then, he has carved out a role through consistency and professionalism. That approach has now been rewarded with long term security.

With his future settled, Divine Lunga remains part of Sundowns’ plans as the club continues to build a squad capable of sustaining dominance in South African football and competing deep into continental tournaments.
