Sundowns to Decide Goalkeeper Reyaad Pieterse’s Future
Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly reconsidering the future of their experienced goalkeeper, Reyaad Pieterse, whose contract is set to expire in June 2025. Insiders at the club suggest management may not extend Pieterse’s contract, opting instead to focus on the younger talent in their goalkeeping department.
Contract Details
The Brazilians hold a two-year option on Pieterse’s contract, but sources close to the club reveal that the likelihood of this option being exercised is slim. A club insider stated, “The club is believed to be making a decision soon, but as things stand, it doesn’t look like they will renew his contract. If they decide not to, Pieterse will leave at the end of the season.”
Focus on Youth Development
Sundowns appear to be planning for a future centered on younger goalkeepers, such as Jody February, Sanele Tshabalala, and Ricardo Goss—currently on loan at SuperSport United. The club also has prospects from their Diski Challenge team in the pipeline.
Another source added, “With Ronwen Williams as their first-choice goalkeeper and Denis Onyango still in the squad, the focus is on giving younger keepers more opportunities. This strategy aims to streamline competition within the department.”
Pieterse’s Tenure at Sundowns
Pieterse, 32, joined Sundowns from SuperSport United in 2018 but has struggled for game time. Over six years, he has made limited league appearances, and this season, he has yet to feature in any matches for the club.
Sundowns’ Official Response
Efforts to obtain a comment from Sundowns were unsuccessful at the time of publication.
The decision regarding Pieterse’s future will likely shape the club’s goalkeeping strategy for years to come, as they look to balance experience with the development of emerging talent.
