SuperSport United Plot Surprise Move to Bring Back Former Star as Squad Rebuild Begins

Having narrowly escaped relegation on the final day of the season, SuperSport United are wasting no time in turning their attention to reinforcing their squad ahead of the 2025/26 campaign. In a move that could significantly boost their attacking options, the Gauteng-based side is believed to be closing in on the return of a familiar face.

Sources close to the club have indicated that SuperSport United are working on a deal to re-sign winger Thapelo Maseko from Mamelodi Sundowns. Maseko, who rose to prominence at SuperSport before making a high-profile move to the Brazilians, could soon be donning the blue of Matsatsantsa once again.

“SuperSport United wanted him initially on loan in January before they got Lebohang Maboe, but things didn’t work out that time. Now they are working on a permanent deal for Maseko and apparently it’s believed that it’s imminent,” a source with knowledge of the club’s recruitment plans told the Siya crew.

Adding further weight to the reports, an insider at Sundowns confirmed that Maseko appears to be on the verge of a return to his former club. “You see those players who went to the USA for the FIFA Club World Cup are the core of Sundowns. Their contracts and future are safe. Thapelo Maseko was left behind so that he could finalise his move back to SuperSport United and now it’s believed that the deal is imminent,” the insider revealed.

Maseko’s journey over the past two seasons has been eventful. After joining Sundowns for the 2023/24 season, the 21-year-old featured regularly in the Betway Premiership and played a key role in Sundowns’ victorious African Football League campaign, where he was named Player of the Tournament. He also represented Bafana Bafana at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations in Ivory Coast, helping the national team secure a bronze medal.

Despite these accomplishments, Maseko appears to have fallen out of favour in the Brazilians’ long-term plans, paving the way for a potential return to the club where he first made his name.

Soccer Laduma reached out to SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews for comment, but there was no response at the time of writing.

Should the deal go through, Maseko’s return could prove to be a shrewd piece of business for SuperSport. With his international pedigree and proven quality, the winger could provide the creative spark and attacking impetus that was sorely lacking during the team’s difficult 2024/25 campaign. More importantly, his presence could help ensure that SuperSport steer well clear of another relegation battle in the season ahead.
