Kaizer Chiefs Injury Crisis Deepens as Nkanyiso Shinga Likely Out for the Season

Kaizer Chiefs face another major setback as their injury list continues to grow during a difficult 2025 to 2026 campaign. The Soweto giants have struggled to maintain consistency throughout the season and injuries now sit at the center of their problems. The latest concern surrounds left back Nkanyiso Shinga who appears unlikely to play again this season. His absence would add to an already long list of unavailable players in the squad. With crucial matches still ahead Chiefs must now find solutions while dealing with a thin squad and declining results.
Chiefs currently sit in the middle of a frustrating league campaign in the Betway Premiership. The team has failed to secure silverware after exits from all three domestic cup competitions. Their run in the CAF Confederation Cup also ended in disappointment which further increased pressure on the club. At best the club now fights for a third place finish rather than a title challenge. The situation reflects a season filled with missed opportunities inconsistent performances and constant squad disruptions. Injuries have played a major role in limiting the team’s ability to field a stable lineup.
Two players already confirmed to miss the rest of the season are Rushwin Dortley and George Matlou. Dortley recently underwent another surgery after complications following an earlier operation. Medical staff do not expect him to return before the end of the campaign. Matlou also required surgery which ruled him out for the remaining fixtures. Both players played important roles in the squad and their absence weakened key areas of the team. Their long term injuries already placed pressure on the coaching staff to reshuffle the squad.
The situation worsened after Shinga suffered an injury during the 1 to 0 defeat against Richards Bay FC last Wednesday. The injury appeared serious during the match and early indications suggest he will not recover in time to feature again this season. Losing a left back creates further imbalance in the defensive structure of the team. The medical team will continue assessments but expectations remain low for a quick return. This injury adds another name to an already crowded treatment room at Naturena.
Several other players also remain unavailable for selection. These include Given Msimango, Brandon Petersen, Mfundo Vilakazi, Inacio Miguel and Etiosa Ighodaro. For the upcoming fixture Chiefs will also miss Aden McCarthy and Sibongiseni Mthethwa due to suspension. Chiefs will face Durban City FC at FNB Stadium on Sunday without these players. The growing list forces the technical team to rely heavily on squad depth and younger players.
Amakhosi still have twelve matches left before the season ends on 23 May. Each game now carries major importance as the club attempts to secure a respectable league finish. The team must manage injuries carefully while maintaining competitiveness on the field. Supporters will hope that remaining players step up during this difficult period. The season has tested the squad’s resilience but the final stretch will reveal the true character of the team. If Chiefs can stabilize performances despite these setbacks they may still salvage pride from a challenging campaign.
