He posted a derogatory statement on his Instagram which has since been deleted. The term he used has been decoded as racially offensive.

Manchester United has since come out and said that the term Cavani used is considered to be an endearing and affectionate term in South America.

This has sparked debate with the Luis Suarez and Patrice Evra controversy 8 years ago. Suarez was given a lengthy ban for being guilty of racially abusing Patrice Evra.

On the game, Manchester United came from 2 goals down to defeat Southampton 3-2 at Saint Mary’s Stadium.

Cavani created a goal for Bruno Fernandes before bagging himself a brace.

“He is one of the best because of his experience and qualities, that movement. He is one of the best movers you can see.” Solskjaer told the club website.

“He can peel off the shoulder, he can get in front of you, he can pin you. He wants to be in between the two posts, which I love.

“I love a centre-forward who gets in there. It might hurt sometimes but, when you’re there and you get the ball there, you’ve gambled and the ball’s been delivered, it’s a goal. Two goals!”

United suffered an injury setback when goalkeeper David De Gea limped off at half time.

“Let’s have a little check on [De Gea],” Solskjaer told Sky Sports. “Hopefully he will be ok for Wednesday but I’m not sure.”

De Gea was replaced by Dean Henderson.

“Dean played well though. He is a ‘keeper who is used to being vocal. He wants to organise his team. He didn’t have big saves to make but he was safe with his hands.”
