Uncertainty Looms Over Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s Future at Mamelodi Sundowns After MTN8 Absence

The future of Brazilian midfielder Lucas Ribeiro Costa at Mamelodi Sundowns has been cast into doubt following his conspicuous absence from the club’s emphatic 4-0 MTN8 quarter-final victory over Richards Bay on Sunday at Lucas Moripe Stadium in Atteridgeville.
Despite the dominant performance by Masandawana, fans and media alike were left questioning the status of several key players, most notably Ribeiro and Bafana Bafana defender Khuliso Mudau. Neither featured in the matchday squad, sparking speculation over their long-term roles under newly appointed head coach Miguel Cardoso.
Reports suggest that Mudau had already departed the club’s pre-season camp in Rustenburg, further fueling rumours of a potential exit. Meanwhile, striker Peter Shalulile is also believed to have parted ways with the club, with sources claiming he picked up his clearance at Chloorkop last Friday.
During the post-match press conference, Cardoso was notably guarded when asked about the trio’s future, refusing to provide clarity on their situations.
“I will not here, as you may understand, start discussing what’s happening with Lucas or Mudau or Thapelo Morena who was also not there,” Cardoso said, emphasizing a desire to focus on the team’s development rather than ongoing uncertainties.
“Obviously, as a coach, you want to have a team that is as complete as possible. All coaches want to receive reinforcements for the new season as quickly as possible. But that doesn’t mean that we can’t cope with our responsibilities. Me, myself, I have to work on solutions rather than on problems,” he added.
The silence around Lucas Ribeiro Costa’s status is particularly puzzling given his importance to the squad last season. His absence from such a pivotal fixture could indicate internal issues or potential transfer activity behind the scenes.
Cardoso also declined to comment on the future of Thembinkosi Lorch, who spent the previous season on loan with Moroccan giants Wydad AC.
“Regarding Lorch, like Lucas, like Peter, like Mudau, I will not be discussing here. Lorch is the situation that is coming from the past and will also be addressed by the club at the proper time,” Cardoso stated, indicating that official communication will come through formal channels.
With the new season on the horizon and key players missing in action, Mamelodi Sundowns find themselves at a crossroads. Whether the current silence signals a broader squad overhaul or temporary setbacks remains to be seen. For now, the club’s fans will be watching closely for official announcements to bring clarity to the mounting uncertainty.
